essay 4 blog
My final essay will consist of putting all my observatory work, description of police officers and interviews throughout the course of the semester at the police station into my final portfolio. However, my most important piece of information that will be included in this summary of the time spent at the station will include a more in depth look at the emotional being of the men and women in uniform. How much they truly care for the safety of the public will be on full display. Their hard work training for various kinds of emergencies and the reason why they work so hard (because they are passionate about caring for people) was seen by myself first hand.

Reading for 4/13
The author does a great job putting all the essays of observation at the bowling alley together. There is smooth transition between the essays as there are strong intros and conclusions giving away information about what Hanover Bowladrome is all about. Family fun is the best way to describe this awsome atmosphere. It is where the author was able to relieve stress with her family after her grandma died and it is where she observed another family (a mother and her two boys) bonding.

Interviewing
When it comes to interviewing someone it is important to remember to find a good location. It is key to ask somebody relevant questions in a familiar and comfortable place because they are more open when answering. For example, it would not make much sense to conduct a teacher's job interview at a Macdonalds in Boston if the person promoting their resume is a recent Bridgewater State University graduate. Instead, it would be more appropriate to conduct the interview at either the high school where that person might want to teach or at Bridgewater State. Also, being well prepared with questions and a set of goals will help the process run smoothly with great tempo and progress. I know that I have more confidence doing anything when I am well prepared. When I failed to study for my math test I recieved a D, but when I read my flashcards countless amounts of time for my History speech I got an A. The atmosphere is arguably the most vital part of an interview. The person being asked all the questions must be in a sense spoiled. Where, when and how the interview is conducted is necessary to gain the most knowledgeable answers from the person.

Hanover Gems
Hanover Gems is a showcase of bowling history and the way the sport has evolved over the past hundreds of years. I had no idea of the balls and pins being put to good use in historical locations such as Ancient Egypt and Rome. Interestingly, the game was moved from an outdoor game to an indoor game in 1455 England. Also, the game was brought to America by the Dutch a little while after, resulting in the creation of the automatic pinsetter of the 1940's. The Author goes onto talk about her modern day bowling alley in full description. The "crazy"parking lot as well as the change in atmosphere that particular night (since it was time for the women's leauge) made for a really good time. Her friends Laura and Patty tell her that Thursday nights are the worst nights to go to the energetic alley because the men's competetive leauge is overly serious. "They'll kill you if you don't do well", says Laura. The location attracts various personalitites and makes for an interesting outlook on society.

Group Presentation
For our group's presentation we will be displaying Power Point Do's and Don'ts. It is important in a Power Point presentation to have the proper font and color because it helps the audience develop a strong visual understanding of what the topic is about. For example, using the same font for the title and bullets may cause the reader to have trouble understanding what is being discussed because the title does not pop out. It ends up blending in with other less important words and it does not produce a clear meaning. Also, when it comes to font, it is important to use bold letters at times for the benefit of the audience in the back of the room. A group much emphasize the importance of what works best not only for their distribution of information, but for the viewers. Color is also an important factor when it comes to working on a presentation. Using light letters (white or yellow) with a dark back round (black or regular blue) makes it easy on the reader's eyes and helps get the point across quicker.

Mapping Space
Creating a diagram of the horse industry, on page 197, puts the locations of the horse lovers, riding students, Amish, horse-related lifestyles, ect. on display for the reader. The artist of the diagram is giving off a strong sense of collective action as the interests of the different workers and their tasks are creating alot of progress. The character Emily uses the barn for her research, "The map allowed her to see how space gets used in the barn-by owners, sellers, buyers, tourists, and horses...". Her labels on the map also helped in her use of detailed description. Page 198 says, "Without her attention to the space and her detailed mapping, Emily would not have created such a detailed verbal image of this space. Her data and her careful documentation create a spatial gaze for us as readers...". Long rectangular boxes represent cattle loading chutes, while a few ovals are symbols for tack safe rings.

library observation on the 1st floor
Observations:
- By the computers a few male friends are playing online
videogames, while two short, well dressed females are focused on research papers and are being good students. The males seem to be having a good time, being a little noisy and the females seem annoyed by the males.
By the desks, one tall, middle aged man is enjoying a coffee.
He has his legs stretched out to another chair, casually reading a
magazine. Another man, in his early twenties is glaring at his school
book, sitting straight up in his seat. He is copying down information
in his notebook.
By the couches, students are comfortably sitting and reading
their small books. They are loudly chatting about their plans for the weekend and nobody in the library cares.
Responses
How can some of these students be so loud and social in the library? I get a sick feeling when I go to read here.
Are females naturally better students than males? Are the two males playing videogames choosing to do that over school work?
How can the young student sitting straight up in his chair do work like that? I know I would be sitting back on the couch.
Can the library be an even bigger distraction than the dorms? If everyone goes there is it bound to be more complicated to focus?
Summary- The observations I had made at the library gave me a solid example of how I should make descriptive commentary at my research site on campus. Like at the library, I should comment on people's emotion, actions and surroundings. When I return to make notes at the police station, I will be sure to discuss how officers work in the different parts of the building. Not everyone has the same task, so I will be sure to write down which jobs are harder and more stressful than others. I am interested in figuring out which parts of the building are more action packed. In other words, where most of the drama is coming from.

essay 2
"Slide, Roll, Slam" is an observative account of the various personalities and activities between the lanes of Nicole William's town bowling alley. Shes describes the older men in their 50's and 60's as quiet and looking to just have a good time. She describes the younger, more competive men as very loud and supportive of their teamates. As one individual prepares to bowl, she says, " one man rubs the bowling ball in his hand as if warming it up will have an effect on the game". As she becomes less amused with the action going on where the games are taking place, she relocates herself near the main entrance to view the bulletin board. Up on the wall it reads the reasonable prices for the proper shoes to rent, strings to play and senior citizen deals. She feels that these deals will make the customers return for more entertainment. Then, as she continues to stroll through the building she describes the desirable concession stand, with its delicious pizza, hot dogs and chocolate. This place can simply be described as heaven.
As the night comes to a close, the narrator heads back to the lanes to see whats taking place between the rambuncious men. Personalized bowling balls are returned to their bags, the small chat is brought outside and a crazy man in shorts is acting like he is nuts in the cold weather. This paper is a complete summary of what I would expect to see at my local bowling alley. Enjoyable entertainment and a great friend and family atmosphere is what makes this sight special. A series of of eveings spent at this location will lead to a lifetime supply of memories.

The Bridgewater State University Police Station
For my project I would like to carefully observe and research on the near by hardworking Bridgewater State University police station. Not only is the convenient location right next to the famous Shea Durgin dorms, but from what I know it is also easily accessible. The building is the home of numerous well trained officers on duty to protect and serve this institution's relatively large population.
Vital questions that I am interested in asking include the number of workers, the different hours of the varying jobs, the history of the station and the impact the force has had on the school. How am I affected by their continous efforts? I am unsure of what I should resolve my paper around. Should it be the station? Should it be the heroic officers? What is my topic going to be that sets the tone for the rest of my paper following my thesis in the introduction?

Iowa 80
In Rick Zollo's Friday Night At Iowa 80, overworked truck drivers in search of a vital break from the boring reality of traveling many neverending miles is on full display at a rest village off Interstate 80 outside the tiny town of Walcott. Never before has it been such a relief for a restraunt customer to grab a delicious meal after spending extended hours on the nation's wide open road, sometimes seeing nothing but cars in front and trees to the left and right. Also, it is not unlikely to find a middle aged man reliving his childhood dreams in the very entertaining arcade because of how good it feels to be doing anything but transporting goods across a number of states. For the 22 year veteran driver Gordy, sitting at the Iowa 80 booth looking for food and pointy chinned Morris, trying to win a stuffed animal for his lady, the adversity that they face in their careers forces them to really do their best to stay sane when its time to pull over.
At the restraunt, the overwhelmed Gordy described how chaotic his obligations were to General Motors, having to constantly use his pain of a logbook which would always lead to cheating by the test takers. He went on to discuss how demanding the tasks at hand were for a dedicated union man like himself to his "fly by night" company. At the classic 90's styled arcade, Morris talks about how he has only been home for "three and a half hours in the past four months". His continous moving around from place to place has forced him away from his top priority, his family. He came up north to the midwest all the way from Lafayette, Louisiana. Many sacrifices are made to get the well earned pay check at the end of the very long day.
